What is the difference between Can and Could ?
When you ask for permission to do anything, we use them.
Could I please have another biscuit?
We are especially polite when we use could. We can use the words can't or couldn't to increase the pressure on a respondent to provide a good response.
For instance, when we anticipate that the response will likely be "no" or when permission has previously been denied, we might use couldn't:
Don't you think we could remain a little while longer? Please?
We use the words can and can't to grant or deny permission.
Instance: You may use the available room. You cannot have any more chocolate, please.
2. When we offer to do something or when we suggest doing something, we use the words could or can.
Can/could I help?
3. We use could in a more formal or respectable way. We also use it in the past or future.
Examples: When I was nine years old, I could swim but not ride a bike.
• When you finish your assignment, you can play with Amy.
Could I please have some tea?
Can I transport your bags?
• Tonight, we could travel somewhere.
• If you hurried up, you could get there in time.
